Chapter 283 A Surprise Attack on the Word Bearers
Chapter 283 A Surprise Attack on the Word Bearers
The Word Bearers are undoubtedly a formidable enemy. Within the Chaos faction, they possess the largest scale and the most complete organization. Despite having endured countless brutal battles, the Word Bearers still maintain a considerable size.
Casal stood before the hatch of the Thunderhawk gunship, gazing at the holographic projection of the Word Bearer destroyer. This massive warship, like a colossal black beast, hovered in orbit around Planet Case IV. Its armor was covered in chaotic runes, and its turrets and defensive arrays shimmered with a dark red light, like a slumbering demon.
“The Word Bearers’ defenses are very strong,” Casal said in a low voice, tracing his fingers across the hologram. “But there are only about a hundred Chaos Space Marines on this destroyer; the rest of the Word Bearers are stationed on the ground. This is our only chance.”
He turned to look at the White Scar warriors gathered behind him, their white power armor standing out starkly against the dimly lit cabin. Russell and Arya stood to the side, their Bloodthirster shovels and Fire Kirin laser guns already prepared.
“Our target is the core of this destroyer—its Void Shield generator,” Casal continued. “Once we destroy it, we can cut off the Word Bearers’ orbital support and gain the upper hand in the ground battle. But we must be quick! Strike, destroy, retreat—no lingering!”
The White Scar warriors let out a low growl, their power armor joints emitting a synchronized hydraulic groan. Casal's gaze swept over everyone, finally settling on Russell and Arya.
“Russell, Arya,” his voice held a rare hint of respect, “your mission is to cover the assault team and ensure we reach the Void Shield Generator. The Word Bearers’ Chaos Wizards and Mutant Warriors are no ordinary enemies. Are you ready?”
Russell nodded without saying a word.
Arya gently raised her hand, and psychic energy condensed into a glimmer of light at her fingertips: "I will use psychic energy to suppress their wizards and disrupt their defense system."
Casal nodded in satisfaction, then shouted, "All White Scar warriors, prepare for a surprise attack! Remember, our target is the Void Shield Generator. Do not linger! For the Emperor! For the glory of the White Scars!"
The roar of the Thunderhawk gunship's engines suddenly intensified, and the hatches slowly opened, letting in a chilling aura of the void. The White Scar warriors quickly checked their equipment; their power swords and explosive guns were already ready.
"Let's go!" Casal raised the White Tiger Blade high, its blade slicing a silver streak in the starlight.
The Thunderhawk gunship hurtled toward the Word Bearer destroyer like an arrow released from a bow. The Word Bearer's defensive turrets immediately opened fire, and dense laser beams and shells wove a web of death in the void.
"Prepare to land!" Casal's voice crackled through the communication channel. "Russell, Arya, stick close to me!"
The gunboat shuddered violently, and the hatch swung open with a roar. The White Scar warriors, like white lightning, charged towards the Word Bearers' lines. Russell's Bloodthirster shovel slashed through the air, leaving a trail of crimson light, while the roar of the Fire Kirin laser guns was deafening. Arya's psionic power erupted within the enemy ranks, instantly interrupting the Chaos Wizard's incantation.
The Word Bearers' counterattack was swift and ferocious. Chaotic battle cries echoed through the destroyer's corridors as heavily mutated Word Bearers surged in from all directions. Their bodies were twisted and deformed; some had arms that transformed into enormous tentacles, others had sharp bone spurs sprouting from their backs, and their skin was covered in writhing chaotic runes. Their eyes burned with fanatical faith, and their explosive pistols and chainsaws gleamed with a bloodthirsty light in the dim lamplight.
"For the Dark Gods!" roared a Word Bearer warrior, his voice like the howl of a wild beast. His arm had mutated into a giant crab claw, which he swung as he charged toward the White Scar warriors.
Russell roared as he charged at the forefront, wielding his Bloodthirsty entrenching tool, its serrated blade gleaming coldly. Golden arcs of electricity crackled around him, forming a burning psionic shield. A phantom image of this shield spun around him, deflecting incoming explosives and sending sparks flying.
"Come on, you twisted bastards!" Russell's voice was like thunder as his Fire Kirin Laser Gun roared in his other hand.
Arya followed closely behind, psionic energy flowing around her. She raised her hands, and an invisible psionic wave knocked a Word Bearer to the ground. A psionic shield formed a solid barrier around Russell.
"Russell, don't rush too fast!" Arya's voice rang out in the communication channel, tinged with anxiety.
"No time to dawdle!" Russell roared, his Blood Drinker entrenching tool cleaving open the head of a Word Bearer. Chaotic blood splattered onto his shield, instantly vaporized by golden arcs of electricity.
Casal, leading his White Scar warriors, followed closely behind, his White Tiger Blade flashing silver through the air. His blade precisely severed the tentacle of a Word Bearer, then with a backhand thrust, plunged it into the man's heart.
"Maintain formation!" Kassar's voice crackled through the comms. "Our target is the Void Shield Generator. Don't get bogged down by these scum!"
However, the Word Bearers' counterattack grew increasingly fierce. A Chaos Wizard emerged from the shadows, his body enveloped in chaotic energy, his staff gleaming with a dark red light. He chanted a blasphemous incantation, and a wave of chaotic energy surged towards the White Scar warriors.
“Arya!” Russell roared.
Arya reacted instantly, unleashing her psionic power that collided with the Chaos Wizard's energy wave in mid-air, creating a dazzling display of light. Her face was pale, but her eyes remained resolute.
"I'll deal with him!" Arya's voice was resolute. "You all continue forward!"
Russell nodded, the golden arcs of electricity around him shining even brighter. Like a raging beast, he charged toward the next line of the Word Bearers.
The Chaos Wizard's next attack was swift and deadly. His staff drew a dark red arc in the air, and blasphemous incantations coiled around Arya's psionic shield like venomous snakes. Arya gritted her teeth, trying to defend herself with her psionic energy, but the Chaos Wizard's energy was too powerful, and her shield collapsed instantly.
"Ah—!" Arya cried out in pain as her body was struck by chaotic energy and slammed heavily onto the metal floor. Her clothes were torn, and psychic power flickered chaotically around her.
“Russell…” She raised her head with difficulty, her voice weak but clear.
Russell whirled around, golden arcs of electricity crackling around him. His eyes burned with fury, and he gripped the Bloodthirsty entrenching tool tightly in his hand.
"Your opponent is me!" Russell's voice was like thunder, and his body was like a golden lightning bolt as he rushed towards the Chaos Wizard.
The Chaos Wizard sneered, brandishing his staff, and a dark red energy wave surged towards Russell. Russell did not dodge; a golden psionic shield materialized before him, colliding with the chaotic energy and erupting with dazzling light.
“Foolish mortal,” the Chaos Wizard’s voice whispered like the abyss, “your psionic power is insignificant and utterly incapable of contending with the power of the Dark Gods!”
Russell did not answer. His golden psionic shield flickered under the impact of chaotic energy, but he remained firmly standing. There was no fear in his eyes, only unwavering fighting spirit.
“Perhaps my psionic power is not as strong as yours,” Russell growled, golden arcs of electricity shining even brighter around him, “but my power is your nemesis!”
He swung the Blooddrinker entrenching tool violently, golden psionic energy clinging to its serrated blade, slicing through the air with a piercing shriek. The Chaos Wizard's staff collided with the entrenching tool, unleashing a violent surge of energy.
"You think you can defeat me like this?" The Chaos Wizard grinned maliciously, the chaotic runes on his staff lit up, and an even more violent energy wave rushed towards Russell.
Russell gritted his teeth, and the golden psionic shield condensed once more. His body was pushed back a few steps by the energy wave, but the shield remained unbreakable.
“Your power comes from darkness,” Russell’s voice was deep yet powerful, “while my power comes from the will of the Emperor!”
He charged forward, golden psionic energy coalescing into a dazzling light on his entrenching tool. The Chaos Wizard swung his staff again, but this time, Russell's entrenching tool cleaved through the chaotic energy, its serrated edge aimed directly at the wizard's chest.
"This is impossible!" The Chaos Wizard's voice was tinged with fear.
"It's over!" Russell roared, shovel plunging into the Chaos Wizard's chest. Golden psionic energy erupted, and the Chaos Wizard's body turned to ash in the light.
Russell was panting heavily, the golden arcs of electricity around him gradually dissipating. He turned and walked towards Arya, helping her up.
"Are you alright?" His voice carried a hint of concern.
Arya managed a weak smile, and her psionic energy stabilized around her again: "I'm fine... Thank you, Russell."
