Chapter 4 Translating Novels, Simple and Easy
Chapter 4 Translating Novels, Simple and Easy
"Jiang Yang, what do you mean?"
Su Jingtong frowned, a hint of anger appearing on her face.
"You've got a temper now, haven't you? Your second uncle invited you to dinner because he wanted to have a proper talk with you. Do you think that will avoid problems?"
Looking at the furious Su Jingtong, Jiang Yang couldn't help but wonder to himself, what is she angry about?
"I didn't say anything. Someone asked me out first, so I couldn't just stand them up, could I?"
Su Jingtong's face turned even uglier upon hearing Jiang Yang's words.
"Someone invited you out? So you treated the proctor to dinner? And you're telling me someone else treated you? What are you pretending for? Do you think bribing the proctor will get you into a good university?"
"You think everywhere is like in the village, where you can build relationships by sending some local specialties? Let me tell you, that won't work in Beijing!"
Jiang Yang was stunned, not knowing whether to laugh or cry.
Did he treat the proctor to a meal? Did he bribe the proctor with local specialties?
This woman's thought process is truly unique.
However, Jiang Yang still patiently offered an explanation.
"The proctor simply appreciated my knowledge and wanted to discuss academic issues with me."
Su Jingtong sneered: "Academic issues? You? Don't pretend, Jiang Yang, I know what you're up to!"
"It's whatever you say!"
Jiang Yang was too lazy to explain any further.
There's no point in arguing with someone so stubborn.
Then turned and left.
Su Jingtong was left behind, her face full of disappointment.
"You're hopeless, Uncle, let's go!"
Jiang Yang arrived at the small restaurant, where his teacher had already ordered four dishes and a soup and was waiting for him.
"Jiang Yang? Come, come, have a seat. My surname is Liu, you can call me Teacher Liu," the teacher greeted him warmly.
Jiang Yang sat down opposite his teacher, looking at the steaming dishes on the table, and felt moved.
In this era of scarcity, it was truly a rare treat to have a decent meal.
"Jiang Yang, I see that you are quite insightful about literature at such a young age."
Teacher Liu ate and chatted, her words full of praise.
"You flatter me, teacher. I just enjoy reading and am simply sharing my thoughts," Jiang Yang replied modestly.
The two chatted about everything from modern poetry to Western literature, from Lu Xun to Ba Jin, and found themselves getting along very well.
Teacher Liu discovered that Jiang Yang's knowledge far exceeded his expectations.
Jiang Yang also felt that Teacher Liu was a rare mentor and friend.
At this moment, Jiang Yang's attention was drawn by a sound, and he turned his head to look.
There, the restaurant waiter stood looking troubled. Opposite him, a blonde, blue-eyed foreign woman was speaking fluent English and gesturing incessantly, but the waiter couldn't understand a word she said.
The woman was tall and slender, and even in simple jeans, her beautiful figure was still undeniable.
This foreign woman probably doesn't speak Chinese.
Jiang Yang put down his chopsticks, got up and walked over.
Can I help you?
Jiang Yang asked in fluent English.
The sudden use of English stunned everyone present, including Teacher Liu and the waiter.
In this day and age, people who can speak fluent English are extremely rare.
Upon hearing Jiang Yang's voice, the foreign woman's face lit up with joy. She then looked at Jiang Yang as if grasping at a lifeline and began to explain in English.
Jiang Yang patiently inquired about her needs and ordered the food for her.
However, after ordering the food, Jiang Yang was about to leave when the foreign woman stopped him and insisted on thanking him and treating him to a meal.
Jiang Yang had just eaten and wasn't hungry, but he couldn't refuse her hospitality, so he sat down with her.
After sitting down, the other person began to introduce herself. Her name was Emily, she was a writer from the United States, and she came to China to translate her novels into Chinese.
Just then, a man wearing glasses and a Zhongshan suit hurriedly walked in.
"Sorry, I'm late."
He spoke in Chinese with a slight foreign accent.
"This is my translator."
Emily didn't blame him, but explained to him that Jiang Yang had ordered the food for her earlier.
The man turned to look at Jiang Yang, his eyes filled with surprise.
Then, he excitedly grasped Jiang Yang's hand.
"Hello, my name is Li Ming. I just returned from studying in the United States. I am currently working part-time as Ms. Emily's translator."
Hello! I'm Jiang Yang.
Jiang Yang greeted the other party neither humbly nor arrogantly.
"Hello Mr. Jiang, I didn't expect your English to be so good. As you probably know, Ms. Emily came to China to translate her works into Chinese. I've been translating them for her, but Emily's novels are so profound that I'm finding them a bit difficult to translate. Would you be interested in giving it a try? The compensation will be quite good."
"Oh?"
Jiang Yang's heart skipped a beat; this was an excellent opportunity for him.
This will not only solve his current financial problems, but also allow him to gain experience.
"I am glad to."
"Then it's settled, Mr. Jiang, thank you so much!"
Li Mingjian and Jiang Yang agreed, and Li Mingjian was overjoyed.
"You're welcome!"
Later, Li Ming and Emily learned that Jiang Yang had friends there, so they called Teacher Liu over to join them at the same table. The group talked for a long time before finally ending the conversation.
After finishing his meal, Jiang Yang went straight back to the county guesthouse.
He took Emily's novel and manuscript paper out of his handbag.
Jiang Yang turned to the title page of the novel: "Whispers of the Wind".
After briefly glancing over the preceding content, he began translating.
Before I knew it, the sky outside the window had already turned white.
Jiang Yang put down his pen and stretched.
He didn't sleep all night and translated 10,000 words.
He carefully organized the translated manuscript and put it into his satchel.
After a quick wash, Jiang Yang went to the examination room and found his seat.
The exam bell rang, and the exam papers were distributed.
He picked up the exam paper and quickly glanced through it.
Twenty minutes later, Jiang Yang put down his pen, stood up, and handed in his paper.
The proctor shook his head.
This kid handed in his paper early again!
Jiang Yang's habit of submitting his exam paper early in every exam had already attracted the attention of the invigilators.
Jiang Yang ignored everyone and went straight back to the guesthouse, where he fell asleep immediately.
He slept until the afternoon, and after a quick wash, he immediately headed to the place where he had arranged to meet Emily.
He handed over the translated manuscript.
Li Ming took the manuscript.
As he turned the pages, shock gradually spread across his face.
He looked up at Jiang Yang in disbelief.
"You translated 10,000 words in just one night? And you translated them so well!"
"fine……"
Jiang Yang modestly declined.
"Mr. Jiang! You're amazing!"
Emily was also very excited when she received Jiang Yang's manuscript. Although her Chinese was still a bit rusty, her appreciation was evident.
"Thank you, Ms. Emily."
"I will definitely finish translating the rest of the manuscript before I register."
Emily chuckled softly, "I'm really looking forward to it! There are still over 100,000 words to go, and you only have a week. Are you sure?"
"no problem."
Jiang Yang smiled confidently; writing over 100,000 words wasn't too difficult for him.
Emily covered her mouth and chuckled, saying, "I believe you can definitely get into university!"
Jiang Yang smiled faintly.
Without further ado, Li Ming immediately paid him the 10,000-word manuscript fee.
